Character profile

Name:Lewis Barker
Age:16
Gender:Male

This is a character profile for an audience member in which I feel our film will be aimed at. This is a picture of them and I will portray their ideas towards the horror genre. Here is a small section of information on that;

Lewis is currently at North Herts College studying sport. He is outgoing, sociable and is perfect representation of the type of person I am looking to aim my film at.
He likes going out which is clearly stated by the photo where is at a festival. He is very social and goes out with friends regularly, this is what I want from our target audience so they are more likely to go to the cinema with friends. The age range is 15-25 and for both genders, you can tell from the photo he is more likely to watch a film with friends than family.  Him and his mates only go to college three times a week, so has a lot of free time on his hands, most of these times he spends with friends.
His facial expression is happy and natural possibly suggesting that she enjoys going out with her friends and having a good time. He doesn’t like gory horrors such as saw and chainsaw massacre, but more psychological ones with sprits and ghosts in such as paranormal activity and the woman in black. He said he hears mostly about films through trailers on TV.
He doesn’t have a job but is currently looking for one, this means when he wants to go out to the cinema he gets money from his parents, but he said most of his friends have part time jobs.

Evaluation of Final Piece

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

For our media product, ‘Mind the Gap’, we wanted to use and develop conventions of horror. This would allow use to produce a good opening and let the audience instantly know that the genre is  horror, but wanting to carry on watching it. In class we had watched and presented horror film openings and did presentations on them. My group did ‘Silence of the Lambs’, I liked this horror film as it was realistic, it didn’t exaggerate things, others ones I liked were ‘Hide and Seek’ and ‘The Grudge’ Both these film openings use code and conventions of horror and draw the audience in. These gave us all a platform to look at the for elements Mise en scene, Camera angles, Sounds and editing.
For our characters we used a young, innocent girl (Amber), this idea has been used in recent horror films we researched such as Scream and Paranormal activity. Both these films use vulnerable females, around their teens. They both use conventions of horror films, Scream use a masked killer, and Paranormal Activity use a ghost in a new house. The other character (our Villian) was a mysterious, blacked out, hooded man known as the Follower (Me). The mysterious blacked out man connotes fear, death and the unknown. We wanted to keep his identify hidden, again keeping with the horror, I was him in black with a hood that covered his face. We took this ides from the film we recently watched ‘Psycho’. In ‘Psycho’ the killers faced is blacked out, so it keeps the unknown element in the film. The setting of our film challenges the conventions of horror as it is partly set at deserted villages or haunted houses. We went against the these stereotypical locations used in films such as Silent hill and Dracula, we went for a modern train station where we added a train announcement so it felt more like a typical train station. We added the convention of her being alone by filming when the train station was empty. At the train station the Follower disappears, this makes us uncomfortable. So we have contrasted ideas to maximise fear.
We looked at adding the codes and conventions of darkness and the unknown, as normally the killer is in the dark, the Follower is always masked but always under a light which is going against the stereotypical killer. The light makes the follower stand out and always seen by the audience. We had hidden messages in within the mise-en-scene such as warning signs that at once we didn’t notice but there were two danger signs at the train station. We didn’t use any words in our opening, we believed this added more tension and once again the convention of the unknown. We also used a flash back as our opening starts with the killing then shows ‘one hour earlier’ and leads to the train station showing us how it happening, this keeps the audience on the edge of their seat, wanting to know what and how it is going to happen. At the start of film we used a POV shot from the Follower, first chasing Amber and then closing in on Amber. This was set in a forest, we used the trees and darkness to connotes being trapped. Music wise we used a typical eerie and uncomfortable sound with high and low pitches like used in Psycho. We used this because when we watched Psycho it made us feel uncomfortable so we wanted to recreate it.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our film would represent middle class and maybe upper class, we have done this by using specific clothing and props. Many middle class girls could relate Amber’s position, as she has a nice phone, many girls can relate to this as girls phones are a big part of there life, and like many teenage girls has her hair straightened and make up on. These things show her class and give the stereotypical young blonde girl who dies.  Amber plays the role of a typical teenage girl, she is an ‘easy’ target for a killer as she is innocent, young and alone. We also showed a working class through the mud covered white vest she is wearing when being chased, this could make the audience feel sympathy and acknowledge her position and feelings, the colour white represents Amber is innocent and pure. On the other hand the Follower is wearing a black hoodie, which blocks out his face, this clothing could relate to people who were in the riot. The Train station shows a could represent a working class back ground, as she is using public transport and can relate to every ones fear of an empty dark train station. So we have mixed many classes so many people can relate to scenes in the film.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I believe our film would be an Art house production, as it is smaller production company and hasn’t done any mainstream films. Our film does not really use Hollywood conventions; also it is a small scale production company set in Britain, which may nor appeal to a widespread market. Another British film company is ‘Film Four Productions’ they would be a good choice to distribute our film as they have done many British films which had been huge hits with the public such as ‘Slumdog Millionarie’ and ‘127 hours’, which could be a factor in them coming to see our film. They have also made some horror/thriller films including ‘Dead set’ and ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’, they have also made some comedy horror e.g. ‘ Shaun of the Dead’ and ‘Kill list’. Therefore I think they could be a good production company to produce and distribute our film.

Who would be the audience for your media product?
Our film is certificated with a fifteen age restriction, so we will aim it at an audience of teenagers and young adults above 15 any gender who is interested in horror films. We believe as our film stars a teenager, it will attract other teenagers in and out of education, also we expect the film to attract people from an middle class social back ground to watch the film.
Another reason the film would attract teenagers is our film also uses props such an I phone which is something they can relate to their own lives.  Our film could also be related to a thriller as it has suspense and you never know what’s going to happen, It is also a psychological film rather than explicit so a lot is left to the imagination. The person in my character is 16 and likes psychological horrors, so I feel this would be the age of the audience for our film.
Teenagers also have a lot of time on their hands compared to others, and many have part-time jobs so they will have money.  Teenagers visit the cinema a lot more than adults so they would be the best market to target bring in more profit, they are also likely to talk about the film was are more likely to tell school peers and friends. Teenagers also use social network sites such as Facebook and Twitter so if the film was a success it would be like free advertising. Another reason for our decision is teenagers have a lot of free time so going to see our film could be a social out going. So I think if the film is a success, teenagers will be the main viewers.

How did you attract/address your audience?

We attracted our audience by using a character of around the same age as the certificate we set, 15. We used mise-en-scene things that represent teenagers, such as nice clothes, phones and public transport. By having these things in the film it attracts the audience as they can relate to these things, this will keep them interested in the film. We use the technique of a flash back, so the killing is at the start and the next part explains the leading up to it, this makes the audience instantly want to know what happened to lead to this point, we don’t use any language this adds the unknown effect and draws in their interest and attention. By targeting teenagers, who most use some sort of social network, could talk about the film making free viral advertising, assuming the film is a success We made Amber’s character easy to feel empathy for, by dressing her in light clothing suggesting her innocence and also to highlight her vulnerability, this would attract the viewer by creating a bond between the character and the audience. In my survey of the horror genre, people said they liked the how horror films can give you an adrenaline rush and the unknown factor of them, i believe our film has both of these factors.  In my character profile, Lewis said he hears and see’s about most films is through TV adverts, this shows how we could attract our audience.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
This product has taught me a lot about the technologies needed when making a film. I have now got a larger depth of knowledge of how to edit using final cut on the Macs. We added sound effects, and cut out puts that went wrong .It was a lot more then editing that was needed, we had to find the shots that would be most effective.
We used many shots to add suspense such as low shot, extreme close up and a tracking shot.  A key part of our film was the train announcement, we had to add it to the film, by adding it, it made it more realistic.  The scene I was most please about was the forest scen, the reason behind this is as we only had a certain time to film it, it was slightly rushed but I felt it came out brilliantly. The scenes I wasn’t as happy with was when ‘The Follower’ gets closer and closer I feel the tension could have been added more with blackouts, and sound effects, but overall I am happy with the piece. We had a few technological problems such as when filming our main piece the camera ran out of battery, so we had to take practice shot with our phones. Another problem we came across was wen filming it become to dark, so we had to use flash lights and street lights, fortunately this work and the street light looked red which is the colour of blood and danger. I enjoyed framing the train shot where ‘The Follower disappears, I believe it was the most effective I am proud of the fact that we overcome problems, and overcoming these by using our initiative and using what we had. Overall I think I have improved my technological skills in editing and would feel confidant to edit another film.

Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Looking back at our preliminary task I believe we have learnt a lot. We filmed our preliminary task in just over an hour, and didn’t take it as serious, so we would settle for an average shot.  We also filmed it in school and didn’t expand our ideas to outside of school hours. We also used the standard school editing software, so we did take the time to learn final cut and use it. There were a few techniques we used , we made our piece black and white, to add to the romance. We also used a lot of effects such as dissolves, and sound effects, we used a lot of shots e.g. jump cuts, establishing shots and quick cuts.
Our preliminary task was very short compared to our final piece, so we need to progress our knowledge of editing so we learnt how to use the Mac’s which allowed us to add better effects sounds. We didn’t integrate our prelim into our main as our prelim was more of a ‘comedy’ put what we did use from our preliminary was no language and only having two characters. We used some similar shots in our final piece such as closes up of faces to show emotion. We also developed this idea and did extreme close ups of facial features e.g. fear in the victims eyes. We felt this was a good idea as we did not won’t to over complicate it for the audience. As our final piece was a lot long we created twice as many story boards, we did this as it gave us more detail and more shots. We become more interactive as group, and had better attitude and were more determinate. We also researched a lot more into horror films openings which allowed us to use examples of shots and effects in films.

Story Board - Final Piece

For our main piece we wanted it to create a realistic horror, we made a plot and based it around it. This is our story board...

Picture storyboard - final task

We arrived at the train station where we were filming the start of our final piece. We turned the camera on and we had a similar problem to the one we had in the preliminary task the camera was out of a battery. There was no way of filming, so we thought we should take advantage of us all being here so we took pictures from parts of our story board. It enabled us to know what specific time period we had to get the shot done. We also found out when the train we wanted to feature in the film was due at.

This is a point of view shot of Amber looking at her phone. The phone makes it relevant to today's youth, it also shows an insight to her character.

Mid shot of Amber, this gives the effect that someone is looking over her shoulder. The shot also shows Amber is alone which is good as we want her to see vulnerable

Long shot of myself - lighting isn't as dark as we wanted it. But the sky and sunset look very effective

Extreme close up of myself. We wouldn't use this in the final piece as it reveals to much of 'The Follower'.

BEGA Productions

We had to decided on a name for our production company . We knew very little in this kind of thing, so we had to take many things into consideration such as; copyright, genre, logo, sound and target audience. As a group we came up with BEGA productions, this is consists the first letter of each of our groups first names.

We wanted a logo that could shows a thriller/horror film, so not a comedy. I believe the one we choose shows our film is a serious film , and looks professional. The text also shows an old fashion side which contrasts with the black and grey picture

Story board - Preliminary task

Here are the story boards for the preliminary task, on the left there is a rough sketch of the scene and on the right is short, brief notes on lighting and sound etc.

Evaluation of preliminary task

What was my role?
Within the group we all did our bit to help, as this was our first time filming we all said what we would like to do and what we felt were strongest at. Amber and I took the roles of performing in the piece, whilst Ben & Ellie took the lead in directing. These roles didn’t mean we could not put our own input as when I wasn’t appearing in a scene I help with the camera work e.g. in the establishing shot when ben walks out the doors. I helped with editing where I could, but as we had a limited time to finish so Ellie and Amber took the lead.  I Also came up with the idea of using the toilet and having the toilet role stuck to somebody’s shoe, but as a group we expanded on these ideas, and came up with the idea to add a female to the piece and make it a ‘funny’ love story.

What worked well?
I feel there were many strengths in preliminary task. I believe the location was very good and effective, it was close by, so we did not have to travel far. We were also quite lucky on the weather as the sun was shining just at the right time as we filmed our establishing shot, also we saw two girls walk out the doors we wanted to use in the shot, this captured our attention and is the reason why Bens walks out, this seems to make the scene a bit more lively and effective than it just panning round an empty door. I feel the three quick jump cuts of when I’m in the toilet worked really well, it built up tension and made my character seem more important. I believe the editing went well, we changed the colour to black and white, no real reason just we felt it look better, the music also fitted in well and mirrored what I was doing.

What didn’t work so well?
There were a couple of things that didn’t work, one was when we started filming the flip camera only had half a full battery. We didn’t take any notice of this and start filming, we thought it would be okay, but then we started re filming scenes and trying different camera angles. These things caused us to lose battery and we ended up having to leave the room and come back later when it was re charged. When we came back the people in the background had gone, we tried our hardest to fix it, but we knew there was going to be a continuity problem, we knew it would be ok, as long as we said we made a mistake. We edited out prelim in Windows movie maker, knowing that we would be using final cut on our main piece, so we would not get a head start on how to use it later on.

What would you do differently for your main task?
For our main task we will try and make sure the camera is fully charged when we go to film, it is these small problems we will try to eliminate
Mise-en-scene

·         Opening scene – sun shining, suggesting happy tone, and time of the day.
·         Set in a class room, empathizes school romance
·         ‘Living your dream’ poster in the back relating to my character, who is trying to get his dream girl.
·         Toilet paper stuck to shoe – adds to the comical effect.

Camera angles

·         Establishing shot – including the sun, happy, childish love
·         Point of view shot of my character looking at Amber – low angle – suggest he looks up to her
·         Close up of my characters face , awaiting Ambers reaction – gets rejected
·         Long shot of my character – end of corridor – alone/isolated

Editing

·         Quick cuts between toilet shots – builds anticipation – character yet to be revealed
·          Decided to use black and white, old fashion love story
·          Heart shaped dissolves – comical – romance

Sound

·         Non-diegetic music played throughout the piece ‘what makes you beautiful’ relates to my character
·         Lyrics fit in to what my character is doing
·         Ambers silence – not impressed
·         Ambers footsteps as she walks away – doesn’t care/getting away

Preliminary Task

My group for the preliminary consisted of myself, Ellie Fletcher, Ben Bowen and Amber Holt. We believe a group consisting of two different genders it could enhance the prelim and our ideas. We were gave a short passage to keep our prelim to ‘Subject A enters through a door. Inside Subject B is sitting down, as Subject A enters the room they pass a piece of paper to subject B, Subject B reads the piece of paper and shows a reaction and leaves the room’.
This is a link to our preliminary task http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsRI215dH7c
For our Preliminary task we decided to do our piece as a comedy, as we were in the school and had a short time to film it, we thought we did not the time to produce a good horror as we would of liked it to have been outside of school and at night. So we went against the idea of horror. The idea of this prelim was to get use different camera shots and techniques. It also gave us the opportunity to direct, edit and even perform.
When wondering what ideas and shots to use, we thought an establishing shot revealing the location, then zooming in to ben walking out the building, by doing this it shows the audience we are at a school, and by zooming in on ben it shows that it is in the afternoon as the school has students in. We then cut to an extreme close up of three quick shots, first of my hand flushing the toilet, second of me washing my hands and lastly drying my hands, these shots were no longer the 2 seconds each, this shots told the audience that someone was in the toilet but it was yet to be revealed.  There is then a mid-shot of myself walking out of the toilet door with the sign to show it is mens on the door which shows the significance of the gender of the character, we liked this shot as it as the music also start and shows the audience my identity.
We then dissolved in and out a hand impatiently tapping, this added to the effect of the unknown. We continue with a jump cut of myself walking through the corridor, I walk past Ellie, and as a stereotypical male, check out Ellie , we put in an exaggerated stumble here to imply the comedy effect. When I regain my balance we placed a point of view shot revealing myself. We placed a heart dissolve editing technique to over exaggerate the theme of our piece. We then cut to a point of view shot of Amber looking up at myself striking a ‘cool’ pose. We then cut to the cut to the shot of Amber and myself, I reach in to my pocket to reveal a piece of paper, I pass it to amber, we then cut to an over the shoulder shot of amber revealing the piece of paper ‘hey’ to the camera is cut to a extreme close-up of amber her expression of not being interested and throw the piece of paper and throws it back at me.
My facial expressions and gestures when this happens also adds to the comedy effect as I seem to be ‘heartbroken’. I walk outside and down the corridor there is a long shot of myself and Amber, this reveals the toilet paper stuck to myself, this caps of the comic events our film. We placed the music ‘what makes you beautiful’ in the film as it is an upbeat song, and the lyrics relate to our prelim.
